Col. James M. Schoonmaker: A Life Lived With Honor – Opening Night

June 30 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

- $20

Join the National Museum of the Great Lakes as we open a brand new temporary exhibit highlighting the extraordinary life of our museum ship’s namesake.  This opening reception will take place on Col. Schoonmakers 175th birthday on June 30, 2017.

This exhibit will go from his boyhood in Pittsburgh, to his meteoric rise to Colonel in the Union Army, to his development of successful businesses, and finally the trip aboard the Shenango that resulted in his namesake vessel.  Included will be artifacts from his life; the highlight will be his Medal of Honor, on loan to NMGL from the Virginia Military Institute.

This birthday celebration will include cake and beverages as well as the first look at this new exhibit.  This event is a fundraiser to match a grant from the Schoonmaker Foundation.  The suggested donation is $20 and it is fully tax deductible.
