Clarence S. Metcalf Great Lakes Maritime Research Library
The Clarence S. Metcalf Great Lakes Maritime Research Library of The Great Lakes Historical Society is a premier
research facility dedicated to preserving and making known the history of the Great Lakes! It is comprised of
over 125 linear feet of manuscript materials such as diaries, journals, and ships' logs. The Library also has more
than 20,000 photographs, more than 500 postcards, and over 20,000 ship plans for more than 1,000 vessels, in addition to
approximately 3,000 published bound volumes related to Great Lakes history!

Great Lakes Historical Society members and non-members alike are welcome to use the facilities for research
during the hours posted. A staff member will assist you in locating the materials you need. We may request
that you use white gloves to handle some of our archival materials in order to protect it. The Clarence S.
Metcalf Great Lakes Maritime Research Library is not a lending library. Please contact us in advance to make
an appointment, to ensure a staff member or GLHS volunteer will be present and to enable us to locate materials prior to your visit.
