The Clarence S. Metcalf Great Lakes Maritime Research Library of The Great Lakes Historical Society is a premier research facility dedicated to preserving and making known the history of the Great Lakes! It is comprised of over 125 linear feet of manuscript materials such as diaries, journals, and ships’ logs. The Library also has more than 100,000 photographs, more than 500 postcards, and over 20,000 ship plans for more than 1,000 vessels, in addition to approximately 3,000 published bound volumes related to Great Lakes history!
Because of our plans to create the National Great Lakes Maritime Museum in Toledo, Ohio, our research library is only available by appointment and by through email, phone or letter research requests. Expect 90-120 days to complete a research request. Additionally, our fees for non-member research requests are $20 per hour.
