Treasures on the Lakes

Freighter Trip Limited Raffle

Paul Tregurtha The Great Lakes Historical Society is pleased to be able to offer a trip aboard an Interlake Steamship Company freighter during the 2008 shipping season to the winner of the Treasures on the Lakes Freighter Trip Raffle. The trip will be aboard either the historical Lee A. Tregurtha or the 1,000-foot Paul R. Tregurtha, depending on the winner's preferences and scheduling. This trip is made available through the generosity of the Interlake Steamship Company.

This is a limited raffle; only 500 tickets will be available. Tickets cost $100.00 each. Tickets went on sale in June 2007 and will be available until the drawing or until all 500 tickets are sold out. The drawing will be held during the annual Treasures on the Lakes special benefit, on the evening of November 3, 2007.

To purchase tickets, call The Great Lakes Historical Society at (800) 893-1485, extension 3, or complete and mail in the Raffle Ticket Order Form.

Below are the complete terms and conditions of the freighter trip, as provided by the Interlake Steamship Company:

  • The trip may begin at a Lake Erie, Detroit River, or St. Clair River port. The exact departure port will be determined at a later date.

  • Because these are commercial vessels, the actual arrival and departure dates and times may vary.

  • As a commercial fleet our vessel boarding procedure is sometimes via a 15-foot "Fireman Type" ladder. The ability to negotiate this ladder is mandatory.

  • You, and your party, will be required to sign a Passenger Release form before you sail.

  • Because of customer demand, trips sometimes do not end in the same port as they begin. Interlake Steamship will try to keep this to a minimum but cannot guarantee the loading port or unloading port will remain definite. Should this occur, Interlake Steamship will assist with return travel arrangements but cannot compensate passengers for additional travel expenses.

  • You must keep your schedule very flexible.

  • The length of the voyage will be approximately four to six days.

  • A typical voyage may begin in Detroit, Michigan, proceed up the Detroit River and St. Clair River, across Lake Huron, through the St. Mary's River and Sault Ste. Marie locks, across the largest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior, and finally to Duluth, Minnesota or Marquette, Michigan. At these ports, the ship will load its cargo for the return passage.

  • The trip is for two to three couples (4-6 people maximum) depending on vessel availability, aged 18 or over, and in good health.

  • The trip is for the 2008 SEASON ONLY AND CANNOT BE POSTPONED. The trip may be taken between the months of June and September. Every effort will be made to accomodate the passenger's desired date for the trip but no guarantees can be made.

  • Passengers will be served meals in the officers' dining room. All food and beverages are included.

  • The uniform of the day is "casual."

  • With permission of the ship's Captain, passengers will be shown all areas of the vessel.

  • Due to increased security, A CURRENT PASSPORT IS REQUIRED.
